server

As well in the client-server programming model, a server program awaits and fulfills requests from client programs which may be running in the same or other computers. a given application in a computer may function as a client with requests for services from other programs, and also as a server of requests from other programs.

Servers are often categorized in terms of their purpose.

web server:

A web server, for example, is a computer program that serves requested HTML pages or files. a web client is a requesting program associated with the user. the web browser in your computer is a client that requests HTML files from web servers.

Here are a few types of servers among a great number of other possibilities.

Application Server

An application server is a program on a computer. in the distributed network that provides the business logic for an application program.

Proxy Server

A proxy server is a software that acts as an intermediary between an endpoint device such as a computer and another server from which a user or client is requesting a service.

Mail Server

A mail server is an application that receives incoming email from local users. people within the same domain and remote senders and forwards outgoing email for delivery.

Virtual Server

A virtual server is a program running on a shared server. that is configured in such a way that it seems to each user that they have complete control of a server.

Ablaze Server

The ablaze server is a server chassis housing multiple thin modular electronic circuit boards known as server blades each plate is a server in its own right often dedicated to a single application.

Server buying guide Should you build or buy a NAS

Back in the day, the answer was pretty obvious to build your own  NAS and in fact, I built two of them quite some time ago. since then, however, I've been buying mine NAS and in this post, I'll show you why.

So I built these about 6 or 7 years ago. back before the appliance size nazi's were really common and frankly as good as they are. so I also needed a 10 slot unit and back at the time 10 slots the ability to put that much storage on one of these little appliance things really wasn't there. because hard drives were I mean 2 terabytes was about as big as you could get. so these were each popular one of these was populated with 10 one terabyte drives and one of these was populated with 10 2 terabyte drives. because we built one slightly after the other and we used one as a main and one as a backup for a local backup.

But if you compare that for example to the early Drobo this was the first row but we got which held four drives this thing is vastly smaller. obviously that these are and much lighter and takes a lot less power and makes a lot less noise.
If compare to the fabulous Synology 18 17 Plus which holds eight drives but this thing can hold 810 terabyte drives. you've got a much smaller machine a much lighter machine self-contained with all the operating system stuff that you would possibly want all built into one of these machines. it's vastly easier to do as compared to these things. I want to show you what's inside them.

I'll show you how complex they are to build and how much of a pain they were and some of the operating system issues. so when you're looking at NAS today this draw this machine down. here are about 950 960 bucks these back in the day cost me about 750 to 850 to build. so if you were to look at hardware today these Bay's are more expensive today than they were then obviously memory is cheaper per gigabyte and so forth but the fact is you're looking at maybe a hundred bucks a difference between building and buying and sometimes a hundred bucks differences in the advantage of building and sometimes it's in buying. but you're really not gonna see a cash difference in terms of building and buying what you're looking at is the power they use space they take how much time they take to build and things like that.
